Ask any person on the streets of New York City for a Korean restaurant and you would most likely be directed to Flushing Queens or Koreantown (aka K-Town) in Midtown Manhattan since these areas have the highest demographic of Korean population and businesses. I’ve never been to Flushing and quiet frankly the food at K-Town although not bad, just doesn’t do it for me. However there are a few Korean restaurants that have successfully ventured out from those areas. One such restaurant is Do Hwa in the West Village. Located on Carmine Street, this restaurant along with the neighborhood’s eclectic food scene makes the West Village a buffet of restaurants.

Do Hwa caught my eye while walking along Carmine Street after having dinner at a nearby restaurant. I was intrigued by the happy hour special on blackboard outside so I decided to take a peek. The place is dim, loud and caters mostly to the hip and trendy West Village crowd. Unlike restaurants in K-Town, there were very few Korean diners which lead me to question the authenticity of the cuisine. But other than the hot dog, pizza and the bagel, is there any niche food that’s a 100 percent authentic in NYC? Please let me know.

If one is into spicy food this the place to dine. One such spicy dish is the Dak Teegim crispy boneless fried chicken drizzled with jalapeno pepper sauce. Seasoned to perfection, it is juicy and soft while the jalapeno pepper sauce provided the right kick of spiciness. Starter dishes like the Dubu Junpan – seared organic tofu, scallion vinaigrette, and the Mak Gooksu cold buckwheat noodles topped with sesame kimchi, are pretty solid appetizers. The Dubu Jun seared tofu has a great soft texture and the Mak Gooksu has a sweetness that worked well with the kimchi. You are given 2 options with entrees – either with a grill, where guests can cook it on their own – served as a Ssam dish accompanied with chilli and miso sauces and other condiments like kimchi and vegetables; and the other option is already cooked by the kitchen. On one of my visits I went for the grill and had the Dak Gui chicken barbecue (thin breast slices) in sesame marinade; and the Seywoo Gui grill, peel and large shrimp with chili dipping sauces. The shrimps were fresh and so was the chicken. I also had the cooked in the kitchen Dak Gui which was very good with a very “far eastern” taste of mild sauces. Entrées are accompanied by condiments of cooked and pickled vegetables in small plates that can be a meal on its own.

The specialty drinks at Do Hwa is as good as the food. Such drinks were the Ginger Cinnamon Tea with Bourbon, where the bourbon dominated the taste while the flavor of the ginger tea complemented in the background; and the Jalapeno Margarita with pineapple and agave – which is spicy with the jalepeno and salt fusion and yet sweet with the agave and pineapple – a perfect combination.

The simple but chic décor along with its trendy staff of women gives the restaurant a hip setting. The dining room is dominated by black and white hollow block walls, concrete floors throughout and black wooden tables (some with a grill) partnered with black wooden chairs. While a white wall in the middle with Korean designs that plug the squarish cut out of the wall serves as a separator between the dining room and the bar area. At the bar guest can enjoy creative libations on the black wooden bar table where the paint is slowly chipping away showing the natural color of the wood. The happy hour menu is written on the wall and various movies are continuously showing in the bar area’s wall.

Before I began exploring the gastronomic beauty that this city has to offer I was a closed minded diner and would always think that if an ethnic restaurant is not in its own neighborhood, the food must not be good. Now, for me there are two types of foods, one that tastes good and one that tastes bad. Although Do Hwa may not serve the most authentic Korean cuisine and caters more to non-Korean diners, the food is still good and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Do Hwa is sure to offer a home cooked meal served family style that will leave you satisfied and more.

Gastroarte

* This venue is now closed.

When it comes to fine dining in NYC it’s usually dominated by Italian, French and Japanese cuisine. However, within the past year numerous Spanish restaurants have opened throughout the city. New Yorkers have seen the second coming of the Spanish Armada. The Upper West Side of Manhattan has experienced this wave firsthand with the opening of Gastroarte (aka Graffit,) “gastronomic arts” or “edible art” as I call it. Executive Chef/ Owner, Jesus Nunez is a native of Spain and a former graffiti artist. His love of art is apparent in his beautiful and colorful presentations as well as his playful modern approach to the cuisine.

I have dined at Gastroarte a few times – months have passed in between visits so I was able to witness improvements and menu changes. Some of the dishes that I had on my initial visits are no longer available; for instance: the “Shrimp Marble” carpaccio style dish which has a great texture and is very fresh and flavorful; and the “Fake Truffles” made with falafel that tasted just ok, but had an amazing presentation. Among the entrées I really enjoyed “Hake” with zuchinni cream and shrimp puree, which sadly is no longer on the menu. I also enjoyed the “Not So Average Egg,’ which is very tasty and well-seasoned; and the”Serrano Wrapped Monk Fish,” both of which are currently on the menu. The restaurant originally had a policy that the tapas menu was only available in the Tapas Bar, but I was glad that it can now be ordered in the main dining room as well.

On my most recent visit, my dining partner and I decided to share (from the tapas menu) the Albondigas De La Abuela made of meatballs with sweet potatoes cream and purple potatoes confit. We both agreed it was delicious and the sauce complemented the meatballs very well. A special chicken entrée was presented that night that was not on the menu – “Chcken Pepitoria,” pulled chicken meat placed on top of a sunny side up egg and baby zucchini with crispy fried chicken skin. The chicken was moist and meticulously prepared. Hopefully it will be a regular on the menu. And finally, I had their cheese plate consisting of 3 cheeses, Machega, pasteurized sheep milk from Machega, Tetila, a pasteurized cow’s milk and the Valdeo from pasteruzied cow and sheep’s milk. All three were very good but the Valdeo stood out with a sublime taste that I’ve never experienced in a cheese. The desserts were equally impressive like the Convertion of Bouley made with peaches and wheat. It has an interesting combination of natural sweetness from the peaches complemented by the texture of the wheat. Gastroarte complements its great tasting food with an extensive wine list from Spain.

Located on a quiet residential street this sunken restaurant is about three steps below street level. Its sleek wooden floor extends throughout the space creating an atmosphere of sexiness. The restaurant has a long layout which begins with the Tapas Bar and the Bar Room; both are visible as soon as you enter. The long white stone toped bar table is accompanied by steel metal framed high chairs completing the section . Behind the marble top bar there is an exposed brick wall with a mural mimicking urban street art. Towards the dining room there is more seating which is ideal for couples. There are booth seats directly beneath a mural of a bull and a matador over exposed brick; and fiberglass orange seats ,uncovered marble top tables completes the dining room. The soft music combined with soft lighting gives the dining room a smooth atmosphere. Glass enclosed seating at the very end of the restaurant where the sky can be seen is ideal for dinner under the stars. The crowd varies from pre and post Theater to foodies and locals enjoying the atmosphere and cuisine. The service is unpretentious and pleasant.

Chef Nunez has invaded the Upper West Side with his beautiful presentation and savory flavored dishes that New Yorkers can enjoy. His modern twist on Spanish cuisine is a great way to try something new in the neighborhood’s ever growing gastronomic scene.

Grounded

Starbucks may still be a dominant force in NYC, but there are numerous coffee shops in the city that have the advantage of being less crowded, more relaxed and full of atmosphere. The West Village is full of such places. Grounded, located on Jane Street is one such spot. It might be a bit complicated to find with all of the West Village’s crisscrossing streets, but once you find it you will be back again and again claiming it as your hidden gem.

This wonderful spot has all the makings of a home away from home; great ambiance, rustic décor, fixtures that appear to be flea market or antique store finds, several dark metal very worn chairs, mismatched tables of various styles and shapes, outdoor wooden benches straight from someone’s garden and a weathered wooden counter top by the wall. Numerous live potted plants hang or lay all over giving the space an indoor garden feel. In addition, there is also a bookcase filled with donated books, multiple antique-looking ceiling fans that actually work and exposed brick yellow washed walls that display artwork from local and aspiring artists. At the front of the shop menus are written on a chalk board that hangs behind the counter. Right next to the counter is their open makeshift kitchen.

Grounded serves organic coffee, tea, hot chocolate and smoothies (in the summer.) They also serve bagels, croissants, assorted pastry and made to order salads and sandwiches. Organic coffee beans are available by the pound as well as organic tea. I am not a connoisseur of coffee, but I do enjoy their latte – neither bitter nor too sweet with perfectly steamed milk.

I’ve written many of Rays Picks NYC’s postings while sipping coffee here. I don’t come here for the coffee or for the food (even though the food is good,) but I come for the cozy feel and the vibrant atmosphere. The friendly, young, hip and unpretentious West Village crowd is very comforting and engaging. The noise is at a minimal and the eclectic music playlist plays at a perfect volume making it a great place to work and to meet up for nice conversation. The staff is great, the service is amazing, and no one bothers you no matter how long you’ve been sitting in the shop. Oh, did I mention that is has free WiFi?

As I mentioned, I’m not really a coffee a drinker but I do enjoy sipping coffee while having a nice conversation in a relaxing setting, or sipping while working on my computer or reading. Grounded is my ideal place for those activities and I’m sure it will become yours as well. Just make sure you check out the location on Google Maps or Foursquare in advance or you just might miss it.

Laut

LAUT
15 E 17th St
New York, NY 10003

Official Site

I have passed by Laut restaurant on 17 Street between Broadway and 5th many evenings and there has always been a crowd. Based on the crowd my first thought was, the food must be amazing. But I thought I knew better having waited for an hour on line – in the cold -to eat at a trendy brunch spot that turned out to be just ok. However, curiosity got the better of me so I gave in and followed the crowd. Little did I know that Laut is a Michelin star restaurant and the cheapest one out of the group. As it turned out the food was worth the wait. This has become one of my favorite places for intensely flavor rich Malaysian food.

The dining room of Laut can be a bit loud, full of men and women in suits, love birds on a date and students from nearby NYU. At any given night the music of Jay-Z, Usher and Bruno Mars can be heard blasting through their speakers. If you prefer a quiet dinner or lunch, this is not it. The loudness of the place gives it the essence of an Asian street eatery. Unlike most restaurants, there is no separate bar for drinks, Laut is strictly for dining. The restaurant’s interior is designed with exposed red brick walls, art work created with colored chalk and paint, and high ceilings in patterned copper. The tables are topped with marble and are accompanied by unpadded wooden chairs. A burnished wooden 2 by 4 resting horizontally next to a wall serves as a bench. At the back of the restaurant is an unmanned sushi bar with a gong hanging above. I’ve been to this restaurant on multiple occasions and I’ve never seen a sushi chef nor diners at the sushi bar; maybe they served sushi there in the past? Who knows?

Though Laut serves Malaysian cuisine the menu has a Pan-Asian touch. The food here is flavor rich with the exotic accents Asian cuisine is known for. The spices, sweet and sour are all packed in the dishes creating an explosive taste that has earned them a Michelin Star for two consecutive years (2011 and 2012). Starter dishes like the Satay Chicken, marinated and grilled on a skewer (combined with peanut sauce dip) are deliciously bathed in spices. The Roti Cani crispy thin pancake, chicken and curry sauce was also very tasty. Savory entrées like the Pineapple Chicken made with lemongrass, galangal, turmeric, ginger, coriander, bell pepper, onion, chili, shrimp paste, tamarind juice; and the Nasi Lamak with chicken, made with coconut rice, chili shrimp, chicken curry, pickled, veggie, chili, onion, anchovies, peanut and cucumber packed an incredible combination of ingredients that complement each other well. The fried anchovies in the Nasi Lamak is reminiscent of Filipino food, for which I’m well acquainted. You will be overcome by the sublime taste of the Laut Nasi Kerabu, filleted fish served in banana leaf. Unfortunately that dish was only served during the Malaysian restaurant week event. Noodle soup dishes like the Asam Laksa with Malaysia traditional spicy sour, thick lemongrass, fish flake, gravy onion, cucumber, pineapple and shrimp paste is one to behold. The flavors from all the spices can be tasted from every angle and in each bite – this dish alone is worth the trip. If there was one negative about Laut it would be the dessert. Don’t get me wrong it’s good, but I would rather pass. Most Asian restaurants are not commonly known for their desserts; but with all the amazingly flavored food, who needs dessert?

Laut is not as fancy as the rest of its Michelin Starred counterparts but the draw is the cuisine’s exotic mix of rich flavors. I’ve dined here numerous times and every meal has always been great. So don’t get turned off when you see people outside the restaurant waiting to be seated, try it like I did and you might actually like this place. By the way did I mention that the food here is very affordable? You truly get more bang for your bucks.

Tulsi

*This restaurant is now closed

Indian cuisine has always done very well in NYC and has been generally well received by dinners and food critics alike. But there are very few well known Indian fine dining establishments in the city other than Devi and Tamarind. Early this year Tulsi opened in Midtown East and became an instant success. The restaurant was awarded a coveted one Michelin Star in the guide’s 2012 edition. It’s Executive Chef/Owner, Hermant Mathur is no stranger to such accolades having earned a star in 2009 for Devi, his other Indian restaurant. The star he earned for Devi was the first of its kind for an Indian Restaurant. So when it came time to partake in some Indian food I chose Tulsi and it meet my expectations and beyond.

Dining at Tulsi is like dining at the Maharaja‘s Palace but instead of princes and princesses, you dine alongside Midtown’s corporate crowd. The restaurant’s Sanskrit inscribed glass façade allows for a sneak peek into the glorious palace. Once inside, you are greeted with the restaurant’s soothing and relaxing atmosphere. The dining experience starts at the bar/lounge where you can have pre-dinner drinks at the lighted dark wood bar which displays a mirrored wall design of the world map; or while waiting for your a table you can sit and relax on cream colored sofas at the lounge area. The overall décor is a showcase of Indian aesthetics. As you make your way to the dining room which seats about 50 guest, the main colors are cream and brown with a touch of basil green. The tiled floors are made out ceramic and steel and the chandeliers provide soft lighting while music from the region plays lightly in the background. The tables are covered with white table cloths paired with beige upholstered chairs creating an elegant look. Along the sides of the dining room are four tent-like spaces with hanging cream curtains. Ornately designed steel jaalis and turquoise colored seats accompany the tent-like spaces which are great spots for a nice intimate dinner.

Tulsi serves regional Indian food. They offer a dinner tasting menu option – 7 courses for $65 (the vegetarian version is the same price) with an additional $35 for wine pairings. Their lunch offering includes a $20 two course menu, and the a la carte is available for both times. Indian cuisine is an acquired taste, it’s full of spices and herbs that give each dish a unique flavor. I will mention a few of the appetizers that I had. The Mixed Sprouts – green moong, bean sprouts, black-eyed peas, potatoes, tomatoes, red onion and mint yogurt dressing, has an initial not so pleasing taste, however the flavors gradually rise and your taste bud come around. I then tried the Chaats – avocado and jhal muri. This was one dish that surprised me; I thought I would not like it. The avocado was combined with unfamiliar ingredients, but the taste was surprisingly delicious. The Black Pepper and Coconut Shrimp papri was spicy and had a tomato and cream taste that I enjoyed. Next are the entrées; I had the Roasted Pesto Portobello Mushroom – paneer-stuffed, tomato-fenugreek sauce and semolina cakes. I loved it, it become my favorite dish. The taste of the fusion of tomato sauce and the mushroom was incredible. Next up was the Stuffed Achari Chicken – paneer and mushrooms, tomato and rice. The chicken was neither juicy nor dry but just about right. The stuffing complimented the chicken with the rice that came with the dish. The most interesting dish was the Lamb Nargisi Kofta – cashew nut sauce with cumin-green pea and quinoa. The cream sauce with the hardboiled egg on top of the lamb tasted very good. And for dessert I had the Raspberry Kulfi – valrhona chocolate cake, berry compote and chocolate sauce; and the Jalebi – Indian funnel cakes, saffron syrup and spiced almond milk. The Rasberry Kulfi was ok but the Jalebi was amazing.

Tulsi has a descent wine list, but I was more impressed with their exotic cocktails. I had the Tulsi Martini, an in house concoction with mystery ingredients. The drink was sweet but not overbearing and a touch Absolute made the drink perfect.

Would I recommend Tulsi? YES!!!! The service was a bit spotty at times but nevertheless it wasn’t that bad. I’ve dined here both before and after it earned a Michelin star; the food was consistent if not even better on my second visit. If you’re crave Indian food and don’t mind shelling out a couple of dollars this is it the place to dine.

Manhattan’s Upper West Side is uncharted territory for me; nevertheless it is home to many great dining establishments. Some of the best chefs in New York City have made the UWS their home. Just like Bill Telepan, the owner and Executive Chef of Telepan, a staple of the neighborhood. Bill Telepan is a well known chef in the NYC dining scene and also is an advocate of healthy eating in the NYC public school system. He actively works to eliminate processed food from city schools’ cafeterias. His activism and acclaim as a chef fueled my enthusiasm to dine at Telepan.

Situated in a converted brownstone on 69th Street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, on any given day the restaurant is packed with pre and post theater goers as well as locals. Don’t let looks fools you, when I first walked in I thought the place was small but it’s not. And if you are looking for trendy and chic decor this ain’t it. Even Frank Bruni, the former NY Times food critic calls the interior “outdated “in his review. The restaurant’s maze-like layout is sectioned off containing multiple rooms with fireplaces. A wooden semi-circular bar in the front area designed with exposed red brick and split by a support beam in the middle is perfect for some drinks while waiting for members of your party to arrive. The mood is serene with curtain covered windows, perfectly subdued lighting and soft almost non existence music. The grassy green colored walls are adorned with paintings of produce or farming scenes which hang alongside numerous mirrors. The dining tables are covered in white cloth accompanied by chocolate upholstered seats or booth seats which complement the elegant yet casual atmosphere.

Telepan is strong supporter of local farmers and therefore provides seasonal organic ingredients on the menu, no exceptions. Their farm to table concept is apparent in the freshness of the ingredients in each dish. At dinner time the restaurant’s New American cuisine is offered in a four course tasting, guests can choose from among the dishes on the menu at $69 ($125 with wine parings.) I’ve dined here a couple of times, on my first visit I selected the tasting menu and the sommelier paired the wines flawlessly. Lunch on the other hand consists of two courses at $22 or three courses at $28. Though the restaurant serves a la carte for lunch and dinner the tasting menu is the way to go to actually get a good feel for the taste of the cuisine.

The dishes that I’ve had for the starters were the Calamari Pasta with arugula pesto and baby tomatoes; and the House-Smoked Brook Trout corn blini and green onion sour cream. The Calamari Pasta was very delicious, it was impeccably cooked while the Brook Trout was my favorite dish – the sour cream made the dish very savory. As for the entrées I’ve tried the Codfish with roasted corn golden nugget potatoes, cippolini onions and balsamic; and the Roasted Chicken with wild mushrooms, crispy gnocchi and wild spinach. Both dishes were impressive, the chicken was soft and juicy and had a sour taste that was interesting and tasty. I also tried the Lobster Bolognese spaghetti, light herbs and shallot-garlic-tomato broth; and the Mezzaluna veal meatballs, mushroom and parmigiano broth. The lobster dish was wonderful with the broth as a perfect complement, and as for the veal, although I’m not a beef eater the taste of that dish was enough to win me over. Finally for desert, the Crispy Creme anise hyssop, strawberries and sauce had a fruity strawberry taste was that was magnificent. The Peach Granita Parfait almonds, verbena cream and prosecco chilled on ice had a mixture of peach and almond with the prosecco that combined deliciously. And I was in heaven with Telepan’s S’More marshmallow – chocolate brownie and graham cracker ice cream – chocolate, marshmallow and ice cream is like a holy trinity of sweetness do, I need to say more?

The Upper West Side has a gem in Telepan. The well trained staff provides first rate service. If one is looking to eat great food in an elegant yet casual atmosphere this is the place for you.
